Born in Pittsburgh, Joseph Sulkowski became a painter in realist style especially noted for dog portraits and sporting scenes with horses and foxhounds. His work has become very popular in England.

He lives in the rolling hills near Nashville, Tennessee. As a teen ager, he began to get recognition for his art talent, and he won acceptance to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After completing his studies there, he went to New York City and studied at the Art Students League where his teacher was Frank Mason. He also met his future wife, Elizabeth Brandon, a still-life painter.

While a student, he became interested in domestic animals, but his portraits of Arabian horses gave him his first big break. He was awarded a commission from the Saudi Arabian government to paint two murals depicting Saudi history. This project led to further commissions including portrait work of people and equestrian scenes of people on horses.
